Practice Philosophy

At the orthodontic centre in East Grinstead, we pride ourselves on providing the most up to date treatments with up to date materials and methods available on the market. We are particularly concerned about the child's facial appearance as well as the appearance of their teeth.

In the United States of America most orthodontic cases in the average practice are treated on a non extraction basis. Currently statistics report that only 30% of children within the United Kingdom are treated on a non extraction basis. We would like to think that all children being treated in our centres end up with the 'all American or Californian smile', with a broad, well aligned dentition.

We endeavour wherever possible to do our treatments on a non-extraction basis. We use a lot of functional orthopaedic devices to maintain facial profile and optimise the child's facial growth.

Expertise

Dr. McCance, is a very experienced and highly qualified specialist who has treated over 20,000 cases in the last ten years. He initially trained in Glasgow in dentistry. Then carried out a Master of Science degree, a Diploma in Orthodontics and a Membership in Orthodontics. He then went on to 'higher specialist training' doing his training at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, and at University College Hospital, London. At the same time he undertook a Doctorate in Philosophy degree, looking at the facial changes in children undertaking orthodontics, plus surgery.

Dr. McCance has published widely in international journals. He is currently researching further work in facial surgery at the UCL with the Medical Physics Dept. He is funding research in the use of detailed positioning devices in surgery to make the surgery for our children far more precise and accurate.

Dr. Cornelia Berben LTH. Spec. Orth. qualified as a dental surgeon in 1991 at the University of Ghent, Belgium. She was offered immediate entry in the four years specialist postgraduate training in orthodontics at the University in Ghent from 1991 until 1995. Having obtained this qualification she established successfully her own orthodontic practice in Belgium and worked full time for six years before moving to England with her family. She continues her professional career in a practice exclusively devoted to orthodontics. Dr. Berben gained experience in treatments of all types of malocclusions in both children and adults.
